Enjoy Spring in London

After such a cold and long winter, it’s refreshing to finally see the sun, to be able to stroll in daylight after work and to banish that winter coat to the wardrobe where it belongs. Life just seems so much clearer, our minds are open, active and alert, and new possibilities seem endless. Here are a few Spring tips to help you welcome in the new season with style:

Revitalise your home with a vigorous cleaning but, this year, try a green clean. Grunge and grease can be eliminated by using simple, homely ingredients like lemons, bicarbonate of soda, white wine vinegar and salt. If you are ballsy enough, go for the dreaded ammonia: it is pungent but powerful. Enhance any of your mixtures with a few drops of essentials oils.

Get planting like you’ve never planted before! Try some edible flowers this year for a little change: there are many delightful specimens you could use, such as marigolds, nasturtiums, English daisies, Impatiens, Gardenias, Fuchsias and even Jasmine. Plant these in some new, brightly-coloured, jazzy pots and the difference you’ll see is phenomenal. Why not also try tomatoes, peppers, chard, basil, chives, lemon grassand reap the rewards in the kitchen? It’s incredibly easy to construct a herb garden: just buy some simple breeze blocks, paint them with the names of your herbs, or any other pattern or image if you’re feeling particularly artistic, and line them up outside your kitchen door, patio or balcony.

Bring the colour inside: give your lounge or bedroom a burst of energy with an audacious lick of paint: try slate grey with sunshine yellow; pumpkin orange with oceanic turquoise, lemon and raspberry or use the tried and trusted nautical blues with whites. If you are happy with your interior, why not paint your front door in a gutsy, gleaming gloss?

Homemade is definitely the latest trend to take us all by storm, especially with the day-to-day financial grinds of late. You could try turning your hand to colourful, no-sew banners in perky shades using felt and ribbon: hang them up around the house, outside the front door or around the garden. You could go one step further and craft your own party invitations to invite all of your best friends to your newly spruced home. Why not make it a Sharing Spring party, where each of your guests brings a homemade, edible items along with them, such as a fresh fruit pudding or iced cupcakes? You can sit and munch, whilst swapping inspirational ideas for the home.

Whilst we’re on the topic of food (my favourite I must admit), now is definitely time to reach for that treasured picnic gear. Why not make your first picnic of the year extra special by holding it at night in your newly spruced garden? You could use an array of candles, fruity drink concoctions and yummy, chocolatey nibbles. Pleasantries to one side, Spring is the perfect time to tackle that diet so keep your eyes peeled for seasonal vegetables and fruits, rather than big hearty meals and sweet stuff galore.

Now, not all of us feel this much oomph at this time of year so if you need some help to set you on the road to a Springier time then why not head on down to Home House of Portman Square. With so many seasonal events going on such as summer cocktail parties and afternoon teas in the garden, they really know how to treat a guest. You’ll be on your way to a new you before you know it!

At Home House, the coolest private private membership club in London, there are no stuffy rules – that’s why it’s the best venue in London for spending a productive day or a playful night!
